Topical diclofenac sodium and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly prescribed NSAIDs in the world. These NSAIDs are often used for the short-term relief of pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the widespread use of these NSAIDs in the United States has led to an increased demand for effective and safe NSAID treatment. In this context, we reviewed the current use of NSAIDs, their adverse effects, and their mechanism of action for the prevention of OA, RA, and other forms of OA. We aimed to review the current literature regarding the safety and effectiveness of NSAIDs for OA and to investigate their mechanisms of action. We also aimed to discuss the potential safety risks associated with NSAID use, as well as the clinical applications of NSAID use in the United States.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of OA, affecting millions of people worldwide, and it is the leading cause of disability in the world. The primary symptom of OA is pain, which may lead to stiffness and difficulty walking. OA patients usually suffer from a lack of physical activity, and can have many physical challenges that can lead to poor quality of life. OA patients typically experience pain from the arthritic joints, such as the hands, feet, ankles, and legs, which can lead to knee-related pain and an increase in blood pressure. This is why it is crucial to prevent OA as well as other forms of OA to prevent pain and other symptoms associated with the disease. The most common OA treatment options for OA patients include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil®), naproxen (Aleve®), diclofenac (Voltaren®), and diclofenac sodium (Voltaren®).
The primary mechanism of NSAID action involves blocking the synthesis of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 enzymes. It is a prostaglandin (PG) that regulates pain and inflammation, which can help to relieve the pain and decrease symptoms associated with OA and RA. For example, in RA, the COX-2 enzyme is responsible for the production of prostaglandins, prostacyclins, and other mediators of inflammation and pain. NSAIDs, such as naproxen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen, are widely used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain associated with OA. Although these medications can alleviate pain and inflammation, they do not directly affect the cardiovascular system or cause adverse effects on heart rate, cardiovascular events, or blood pressure. Therefore, they can be effective only when used in a safe and well-tolerated dosage and without any potential side effects.
In addition, NSAIDs are generally well-tolerated and can be taken orally. However, these drugs can cause liver damage or gastrointestinal adverse effects, especially in patients with hepatic impairment. NSAIDs are also metabolized to inactive compounds, such as carbamazepine (Tegretol®), phenobarbital, and phenytoin, which are believed to be metabolized by the CYP2D6 enzyme system. This enzyme is believed to be responsible for the metabolism of the active substance, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital, and to form the active metabolite in the liver. Therefore, NSAIDs should be avoided in patients with hepatic impairment, as their pharmacological effects are likely to be altered.
The COX-2 enzymes are the primary pathways that are involved in the regulation of pain, inflammation, and pain-related disorders. NSAIDs are widely used to treat OA and reduce pain and inflammation, but the evidence for their beneficial effects on OA is limited.

Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It belongs to a class of medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications work by reducing pain and inflammation; these components affect every aspect of daily life, including joint mobility, mood, hair growth, wound healing, and acute pain [2].
The goal of Voltaren Emulgel is to provide relief from pain and inflammation. It consists of a gels-based formulation containing diclofenac sodium and a natural source of methylene blue.
While you wait for the right formulation for your pain-relieving needs, you and your doctor will explore different options, including Voltaren Emulgel, depending on the type and form of pain you have.

Voltaren Emulgel works by hindering the production of natural substances in the body such as from hair follicles [5].
If you have arthritis, back pain, fibroblast disorders, or a uterus, the primary treatment option is the use of topical NSAIDs like Voltaren Emulgel. Other therapies used for pain relief include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) [6] and selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [7].

Voltaren Emulgel addresses a common pain issue that has been reported with oral NSAIDs, like Voltocontin [9].
Research on the use of Voltaren Emulgel in uncastrated men has been limited to small clinical trials and small numbers of open-label studies. The results should provide a solid basis for clinical use [3].
